31 Days of Halloween 2013 - Day 3

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
1987
Chuck Russell

Kristen (Patricia Arquette) is a young girl troubled by nightmares about Freddy Kruger. One of his attacks lands her in a mental hospital with several other kids. It just so happens that Freddy veteran, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp), happens to be working at the same hospital. She quickly discovers that Kristen can pull other people into her dreams. Nancy hopes to use this along with putting Freddy’s physical remains to rest to finally defeat him once and for all. Of course it’s not going to be that easy…

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 sees the series reconfigured as a dark fantasy, with some action set-pieces and a band of heroes using their unique powers to combat Freddy. This is also probably the last time Freddy is viewed as an object of fear, after this point he will become little more than a wry commenter who dishes out ironic deaths. That said, this is still a fun inventive series with a lot of great special effects (the Freddy worm, the gaping mouth needle marks) and a few not so great ones (Freddy’s skeleton battling people in a junk yard). The idea that your will can give yourself power in dreams is an interesting one, but at the cost of Freddy being an unknowable, virtually unstoppable menace. Bringing Nancy and her father back was a good move and this would have been a great closer to the series, but of course its huge profits would guarantee a lot more Freddy to come.

I want to bugger Penelope Sudrow (as the bird was in 1984 when the bird was 18, not as the bird is now obviously).
